Vest Pocket Garden

Situated on a busy street, this residence, with most of its property occupied by house, garage and driveway, left only a limited landscape area which did not inspire the family to spend time outdoors.

Although the area is a modest 40’ x 30’space, these constraints alone would not determine the garden’s success. We saw the space as an opportunity to develop a “vest pocket” garden.

Once inside the “vest pocket” garden, a large walkway ushers pedestrian traffic to the entry door and circular stairway. The view of the existing asphalt drive from within the garden is now obscured by a custom stone wall and lattice screen.

The expansive bluestone terrace functions as a conversation area with ample room for additional seating when entertaining. Like most typical vest pocket parks, the furniture can be moved about if desired. Plantings of Lagerstroemia, Spirea, Hydrangea, Hemerocallis, Echinacea, Liriope and Prunus along the property line nestle in the terrace and provide seasonal color, contrasting foliage and winter interest.

Further definition is provided to the outdoor space by a pergola. Light and shadow play on the surface of the terrace, which influence the character of the space, by imparting dappled shade and relief from the sun.

By employing architectural elements typically found in the interior spaces of homes, we married the house to the garden. Now the family can frequently be found outdoors sitting, relaxing, and enjoying their new garden retreat.
