Sweet Escape
This stroll garden, measuring 320’ by 100’, has several entrances and exits positioned for easy egress. The lawn pathways navigate through the garden, providing definition to the edge eventually reconnecting to the great lawn and surrounding landscape. The garden’s character changes throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Environments ranging from deep shade, dappled shade, to full sun co-exist within the garden, flowing one into the other.
The framework for this multi-season garden offers evergreen plants and groundcovers such as Taxus, Azaleas, Boxwood, Rhododendron and Liriope. The exfoliating bark of Lagerstroemia, the colorful stems of Red Twig Dogwood and Kerria Japonica as well as the plumes of ornamental grasses provide additional winter interest. In spring, large stands of Rhododendron come into bloom. In late spring, masses of Lilac and early blooming Spirea are in flower. Summer explodes into dramatic masses of color produced by different varieties of Hydrangea, Hemerocallis, Rosa, Pervoskia, Echinacea and Rudbeckia. Plants such as Heuchera, Hakonechloa, Ligularia, Hosta and masses of ornamental grasses provide textural contrast and foliage color from spring through fall.
Great views of the ever changing garden can be appreciated from the pool terrace and carriage house which are located across the great lawn.
Strolling through the garden is a favorite pastime of the homeowner and guests. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to the flowers and berries that abound throughout the seasons.
